Best AI receipt scanner app for small business
For most small businesses, Dext is the best receipt scanner: it captures receipts and invoices, sorts them into categories, and sends them to your accounting software, with an optional AI assistant that suggests automations. Zoho Expense is the pick if you want AI receipt scanning on a free plan, and Shoeboxed suits people who’d rather mail in paper receipts.

1. Dext: best for syncing to your books
Why it stands out. Dext captures receipts, invoices, and expenses, sorts them into categories, and syncs them to your accounting software, following the rules you set. Dext says "AI does the repetitive work and keeps you in control," and its AI Assist add-on learns how you work and suggests automations. The plan shown on Dext’s US site is US$302.50 billed annually, for 250 documents a month and 5 users.
Watch out. AI Assist is an add-on, and the price goes up with your document count. Dext’s price excludes tax.
2. Zoho Expense: best free AI scanning
Why it stands out. Zoho Expense includes AI-powered receipt scanning, called Autoscan, on every plan, including the free one. The free plan scans 20 receipts per user a month, Standard scans 200, and Premium scans 1,000. There’s a 14-day free trial with no card, and no contract.
Watch out. Zoho’s pricing page didn’t show base plan prices when we checked; it lists only extra-user prices (US$3 to US$6 per user a month). Confirm the price on Zoho’s site.
3. Shoeboxed: best for paper receipts
Why it stands out. Shoeboxed says it offers "AI-extracted and human-verified receipt data": its AI pulls the data from your receipts, and a team checks it. You can mail in paper receipts with its Magic Envelope service. Starter is US$9 a month or US$97 a year, with 50 digital scans a month, 20 paper scans a year, and 3 users. Every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee. Shoeboxed says Magic Envelope postage is only prepaid within the US.
Watch out. There’s no free plan, and paper scans are capped by plan.
